Braces are very safe and involve minimal discomfort. However, there is a chance that you will experience an orthodontic “emergency.” If you do experience a situation where you have an unexpected problem, call OrthoGrace Dental at 818-280-5596. Our team will provide you with instructions and arrange for you to meet with our dentist, Dr. Joe Medellin, as soon as possible so you can receive orthodontic first aid in Northridge, California.
Here are a few of the orthodontic issues you may encounter during your treatment:
Dealing with Food Trapped Between Teeth
While not a critical situation, having food stuck between your teeth can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Fortunately, there are various methods to alleviate this issue. One effective solution is tying a small knot on a piece of dental floss and using it to remove the stubborn food particles wedged between your teeth and braces. Alternatively, you can try utilizing an interproximal toothbrush or a toothpick to dislodge the trapped food.
Misplaced Ligatures
Ligatures, encompassing both the delicate wires and rubber bands used with braces, can sometimes become displaced. If a rubber band detaches, you can reposition it using sterile tweezers. For loose wires, carefully remove them with sterile tweezers. In the event of a broken or missing wire ligature, please consult our dentist for further guidance.
Dealing with Discomfort
Experiencing discomfort during the first day or two after an adjustment is quite common. To alleviate any pain or irritation during this period, sticking to a soft food diet and rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater can be beneficial.
Coping with Mouth Sores
While braces are not the direct cause of mouth sores, they can exacerbate the pain and delay the healing process. Fortunately, topical anesthetics like Ora-Gel can help alleviate the discomfort associated with mouth sores.
Alleviating Lip or Cheek Irritation
Newly installed braces may irritate your lips and cheeks, particularly while eating. To find relief, you can apply a small amount of non-medicated relief wax to the specific area causing the irritation. This wax is harmless if accidentally swallowed.
Addressing Protruding Wires
If a wire end becomes misaligned and causes irritation in your mouth, you can gently push it back into place using a pencil eraser or cotton swab, if possible. Relief wax can also be used to protect your mouth from further discomfort. In severe cases where immediate access to our dentist and team is not possible, as a last resort, you can clip the protruding wire.
Dealing with Loose Brackets
If you notice a loose bracket, it is crucial to promptly inform our office for further instructions on how to proceed.
Swallowing a Part of the Appliance
Although highly unlikely, there is a remote possibility of swallowing a part of your orthodontic appliance. In such a rare event, it is essential to contact us immediately to receive proper guidance on how to handle this situation.
