What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It starts with gingivitis, causing red and swollen gums, and if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis, leading to gum recession, bone loss and tooth loss.
What causes periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene practices that lead to the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, triggering an immune response. Other risk factors include smoking, hormonal changes, certain medications, genetic predisposition and systemic health conditions like diabetes.
Signs of periodontal disease
Common signs of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Pain in your gums or other areas of your mouth
- Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard foods
- Gum recession
- Loose or separating teeth
- Pus between the gums and teeth
- Sores in your mouth
- Chronic bad breath
- Changes in your bite or in the fit of oral appliances
Diagnosing periodontal disease
Diagnosing periodontal disease involves a comprehensive examination by our dental team. We evaluate various factors, including probing depth of gum pockets, bleeding, gum recession, tooth mobility, dental X-rays and assessing signs of inflammation. Additionally, we may perform tests to measure the levels of bacteria or genetic markers associated with periodontal disease to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.
Common periodontal treatments
Common periodontal treatments include scaling and root planing, which involves deep cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and smooth the root surfaces. This helps to eliminate bacteria and promote gum healing. In more advanced cases, surgical procedures like gum grafting, flap surgery (also known as gingivectomy or pocket reduction) or bone grafting may be necessary to repair damaged tissues and restore oral health.
Gum disease and your health
Gum disease not only affects your oral health but can also have implications for your overall health. Research suggests a link between periodontal disease and various systemic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The bacteria and inflammation associated with gum disease can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation in other parts of the body, potentially exacerbating existing health conditions. Maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking timely treatment for gum disease is important for both oral and overall health.
